Kapoor was born in 1980 to Bollywood actors Randhir Kapoor and Babita. She is the younger sister of Karisma Kapoor, also a prominent Bollywood actor. Kareena's name comes from the Tolstoy novel "Anna Karenina," which her mother read while she was pregnant with her.
Kapoor made her acting debut in the 2000 film "Refugee," a moderately successful war drama that brought her to stardom. She continued with acclaimed roles in the historical "Asoka" and the highly successful drama "Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham..." in 2001, but a series of box office flops marred her career. Kapoor was unfazed by these setbacks, stating later in the "Hindustan Times," "I am what I am because of my flop films." Kapoor went on to critical success in the 2004 drama "Chameli," which saw her break away from her usual roles to play a sex worker. She went on to even greater success in 2009's "3 Idiots," the highest-grossing Bollywood film at the time.
