Joe Lopez is a Tejano singer who was the lead vocalist of the legendary, Grammy Award-winning band, Mazz. He was the Male Vocalist of the Year in the 1991 Tejano Music Awards.
As of September 2015, he is serving a 20-year prison term in a Texas jail for sexual assault and molestation of a 13-year-old girl and is up for parole in 2016. Born Jose Manuel Lopez, Joe Lopez formed Mazz in the early 1970s, and his collaboration with songwriter, Jimmy Gonzalez, brought Mazz to become one of the most successful Tejano crossover bands by combining the synthesizer with traditional Tex-Mex and Latin rhythms. Among the band's hits were "Comprendo Mi Amor," "Laura Ya No Vive Aqui" and "No Te Olvidaré." The band split up in 1998 and Joe went on to a successful solo career that was cut short by the child molestation allegation, trial and subsequent conviction. However, his music continues to receive airplay at Tejano stations worldwide.
