Virginia Joan Bennett Kennedy is an American musician, author, former model and socialite. In addition to her public career, she also married United States Senator Ted Kennedy.
Virginia Joan Bennett Kennedy grew up in New York City to parents Harry Wiggin Bennett, Jr and Virginia Joan. Her father finished his tenure at Cornell University and then worked as an advertising executive to support the family. Joan Kennedy grew up with her younger sister, and she went to Manhattanville College, during which time she worked as a model, primarily in television advertising.
Jean Kennedy Smith introduced Joan to Ted, who was a student at the University of Virginia School of Law then. The two dated and were married in New York on November 29, 1958. The family wedding was a few weeks after John F. Kennedy, Ted's older brother, won the Massachusetts Senate seat by a landslide.
In 1992, she published her first book, "The Joy of Classical Music: A Guide for You and Your Family." She was an accomplished musician over the course of her life and enjoyed playing the piano. With her musical abilities, she worked with several children's charities and dedicated herself to remaining an accomplished pianist, regularly teaching children classical music.
