Jance's first J.P. Beaumont suspense novel, "Until Proven Guilty," was published in 1985. "Dance of the Bones" is the 24th in the Beaumont series and was published in September 2015. The main character, J.P. Beaumont, is a retired Seattle police detective who appears in 21 novels.

In 1993, Jance published "Desert Heat," the first of 17 suspense novels about an Arizona county sheriff in the Joanna Brady Series. In 2014, the most recent Brady novel, "Remains of Innocence," was published. Both Beaumont and Brady appear in the books "Partner in Crime" and "Fire and Ice.”

In 2006, Jance published the first of 11 novels in the Ali Reynolds series. This series includes “Edge of Evil,” “Deadly Stakes,” “Moving Target,” "A Last Goodbye" and "Cold Betrayal." These books, set in Sedona, Arizona, are about Ali Reynolds, a former Los Angeles newscaster. The 12th book in the series, “Clawback,” is scheduled for publication in March 2016. The Diana Ladd Walker series contains five books, including “Hour of the Hunter,” “Kiss of the Bees,” “Day of the Dead” and “Queen of the Night.”
