Katie Holmes was born in 1978 in Toledo, Ohio, as Kate Noelle Holmes. She is the youngest of five children, including three sisters and a brother.
Katie was born two months premature and only weighed 4 pounds at birth. She mowed neighbors' lawns for $20 during her youth and modelled during her teenage years. Katie graduated from Notre Dame Academy, an all-girls private school, with a 4.0 GPA. She received an invitation to study at Columbia University in New York in 1997, but deferred enrollment twice. She took a single photography class in the summer of 2000.
Her first professional acting role was a small part in the 1997 movie "The Ice Storm." She was the only actor to appear in all 128 episodes of "Dawson's Creek" and received $175,000 per episode. In 2002, Katie turned down the lead role in "40 Days and 40 Nights" due to scheduling conflicts. Katie was engaged to actor Chris Klein for five years and to her childhood crush Tom Cruise three months later. Her marriage to Tom Cruise lasted five years.
In 1999, Katie was among Teen People Magazine's "21 Hottest Stars Under 21." She has a clothing line with stylist Jeanne Yang called Holmes and Yang. She runs three to four miles twice a week to maintain her health and clear her mind. One of her favorite foods is pretzels with salsa.
