Mayer's first performances took place in coffee houses and club venues as part of a two-man band, LoFi Masters, that he formed with a friend. The band split due to creative differences, and Mayer recorded an EP with David LaBruyere as co-producer. The two performed across several states before Mayer's appearance at the South by Southwest music festival brought him to the attention of Aware Records. This led to Mayer's signing with Columbia Records.
Mayer went on several tours, including one with Counting Crows in 2003 and one in 2004 where seven concerts were recorded. He experienced vocal problems that required surgery in 2011. These problems resurfaced in early 2012, leading to Mayer canceling a tour. He had a treatment performed on his vocal cords, after which he had to rest his voice for months. From July 6, 2013 to June 17, 2014, Mayer went on his Born and Raised World Tour, his first since his vocal issues. Mayer has been known to perform at small venues with little or no advance notice.
