Selena Perez, the Latina pop star, was murdered on March 31, 1995 by Yolanda Saldivar, the president of her fan club, amid allegations that Saldivar had embezzled money from Perez's boutiques. Perez was 23 years old at the time of the incident.
On March 31, 1995, Selena Perez was shot in the back with a .38-caliber revolver at a Days Inn motel in Corpus Christi, Texas. Perez was able to escape the shooter and run to the hotel desk, leaving a 392-foot trail of blood along the way. She later died at the Memorial Medical Center in Corpus Christi.
The subsequent stand-off between Saldivar and the responding SWAT team lasted approximately 10 hours. Although police were able to corner Saldivar soon after arriving on scene, Saldivar was able to delay arrest by sitting in a truck in the hotel parking lot, holding a gun to her head and threatening suicide. According to witnesses of the stand-off, Saldivar was distraught and expressed remorse for her actions throughout the incident.
The resulting funeral drew some 50,000 attendees. Services were held at the Bayfront Plaza Convention Center in Corpus Christi. During the ceremony, a rumor swept the crowd that the closed coffin was empty and that Perez was still alive. In response, the family ordered that the coffin be opened briefly to convince distraught fans that the singer had, in fact, died.
