The central plot of the show's debut season centered on the suspicion that a lauded Marine, who recently returned from the Middle East, was now a spy. The show's sophomore season follows the CIA agent, played by Claire Danes, as she exposes the Marine and convinces him to help the CIA. Not all goes as planned, however.

Season three saw the story arc of the main character and the Marine, whom she convinced to work for the CIA, reach a climax. Season four picked up with the aftermath of season three and took place mostly in the Middle East in a plot involving a terrorist group.

In addition to Danes, the show also stars Mandy Patinkin and Damian Lewis. In both 2012 and 2013, the show won a Golden Globe for best television series-drama. In 2013, it also won an Emmy for best writing, while Danes also captured an Emmy for her performance as the lead actress in a drama series.
