What Is the History of the Top 20 Countdown on CMT?

"Top 20 Countdown" aired on CMT from Jan. 3, 2001, until Dec. 28, 2012. Lance Smith hosted the weekly show, which aired a countdown of the most popular country music videos, from 2001 until the end of 2009. Evan Farmer hosted from that time until November 2012.

Before "Top 20 Countdown," CMT had another weekly countdown show that had 12 videos on each show. "Top 20 Countdown" featured the most popular country music videos for the week of the show. At the end of the year, the show had a countdown of the year with the most popular videos for the entire year.

Smith hosted the show for the majority of its run, until leaving to pursue other entertainment projects. After Farmer's run as host, the remaining episodes had either guest hosts or no hosts. Besides the music video countdown, other common segments on "Top 20 Countdown" included interviews with celebrity guests, holiday-themed episodes, and trips to events and locations.

"Good Girl" by Carrie Underwood was the show's final song of the year, topping the countdown for 2012. It set the record for most weeks at number one on "Top 20 Countdown" at 14 weeks. After the final episode aired, "CMT Hot 20 Countdown" replaced the show.
