Shayari is a melodic, rhythmic form of Urdu poetry that traditionally expresses feelings of romantic love, affection and sorrow. The poems, also collectively called shayari, are written in Urdu, Hindi and other languages spoken in Pakistan and northern India.
Shayari was originally an oral and musical tradition. In the 21st century, major cities still hold poetry festivals called mushairas where composers and fans gather to hear shayari performed. In addition to traditional romantic themes, modern shayari share thoughts on friendship and life, celebrate religious holidays like Eid and Diwali and express humor. Websites like TrueShayari allow users to tweet and post shayari poetry on FaceBook and GooglePlus.
