Helen Steiner Rice's poem "God Knows Best" contains the verse: "Our Father knows what's best for us, so why should we complain / We always want the sunshine, but He knows there must be rain." The Rice poem "A Priceless Gift" contains the verse: "Friendship is a priceless gift that cannot be bought or sold / But its value is far greater than a mountain made of gold."
Rice's popular funeral poem, "Waiting at Heaven's Door," contains the verse: "For none of us need go alone into the valley that is unknown / But, guided by our Father's hand we journey to the promised land."
The author of several million poems over the course of her lifetime, Rice was a very prolific American poet. By her 25th birthday, Rice was a nationally renowned speaker, and President Coolidge even invited her to the White House. Rice later began to write poems for Gibson greeting cards. Several of Rice's poems, including "The Priceless Gift of Christmas" and "Tribute to JFK," became famous nationally after they were read on "The Lawrence Welk Show." Rice published 10 books of poetry during her lifetime, and, since her death, 65 more volumes of her poetry have been published.
