The first season of "American Horror Story," titled "American Horror Story: Murder House," follows the Harmon family as they move into a restored mansion. However, they soon discover that the house is haunted by its former inhabitants.
The Harmon family consists of Ben, played by Dylan McDermott, Vivian, played by Connie Britton, and Violet, played by Taissa Farmiga. The Harmons move to Los Angeles from Boston into a new mansion but discover the house's previous inhabitants died in an apparent murder-suicide. The Harmons soon begin to experience strange phenomena as Ben, a psychiatrist, starts seeing patients in the house. One of them is a teenage boy named Tate Langdon, played by Evan Peters, who is later revealed to be a ghost.
Tate takes an interest in Violet, who reciprocates his advances. Tate also has sex with Vivian in an attempt to conceive a child for Nora, another ghost in the house. Violet kills herself after discovering that Tate was an infamous school shooter, though she does not realize her own suicide until weeks later, when she is unable to leave the house. By the end of the season, Vivian dies in childbirth, and Ben is murdered by ghosts and then hung by a noose to stage his death as a suicide.
