Black Sabbath forged the blueprint for heavy metal, and the group is recognized as one of the genre's most influential bands. Formed in Birmingham, England in the late 1960s, the group was characterized by guitarist Tony Iommi's sludgy, downtuned guitar sound and singer Ozzy Osbourne's dark, mystic lyrics. The band's focus on the morbid and occult was controversial, but its unique sound sold millions of albums and influenced nearly every subsequent metal band.
Thin Lizzy wasn't the first band to employ dual lead guitars, but the Irish group took the innovation to new heights, creating a form of heavy metal that was aggressive and technical while simultaneously melodic and catchy. Lead singer and bassist Phil Lynott spun hardscrabble tales of working-class life over the group's thundering riffs, creating a vast discography that included hit albums such as "Jailbreak" and "Bad Reputation."
Iron Maiden was part of the new wave of British heavy metal in the 1980s, playing louder, faster and tighter than other metal bands had before. The band's razor-sharp guitar riffs, melodic songwriting and lead singer Bruce Dickinson's soaring vocals helped make it one of the most popular and enduring heavy metal groups.Learn more about Art & Literature
