Some good book clubs to join around the country include the Boston Volunteers, Boston Night Out, Active Lifestyle Nerds from San Diego, the Greater Philadelphia Thinking Society and the Brooklyn Futurist Club. Some good clubs to join in New York City include Books That Make You Go Hmmm…!, The Last Monday of the Month Book Club and the New York Nonfiction Reading Club.
All of these clubs operate through Meetup.com, which allows members to join over 4,000 clubs that meet in locations throughout the country and the world. Each book club features a particular type of book selection that is often evident from the name of the club. For example, the New York Nonfiction Reading Club reads and discusses books that deal with a wide variety of subjects, from the history of chocolate to biographies of notable figures.
Other clubs have more eclectic selections and are based more on the organization that sponsors them, such as the Word Book Club, run by a bookstore in Brooklyn. Some clubs expand beyond reading to offer a more comprehensive artistic experience. The New York 1001 Books and Movies group experiences and discusses not only books but also films, works of fine art and albums.
