Movies filmed in 4k, or 4k Ultra High Definition, have a sharper picture quality than high-definition films. Digital 4k resolutions are capable of at least 3840 x 2160 pixels, replacing 1920 x 1080 HD as the highest quality available on the market.
As of 2015, media offered in 4k UHD resolution is limited, and a 4k-compatible HDTV is required to take advantage of the improved quality. Television shows and movies boast better picture and digital image quality in the 4k format. If the content was not originally recorded in 4k resolution, the visual improvement may be negligible, even with a compatible television.
