As of June 2015, it is rumored that the fourth season of "Longmire" plans to uncover the truth behind the murder of Cady's mother and sheriff Longmire's wire. Cady believed her mother died of cancer; however, viewers know the actual cause of her death is a secret held by Longmire.

Netflix, the online streaming platform, later announced its plans to pick up the show for a fourth season. Show writer Tony Tost teased fans by tweeting song titles from the "Longmire" writers' room, giving fans of the show potential hints of what to expect in the future. These tweets have included Miranda Lambert's "Automatic," Van Morrison's "Who Was That Masked Man"" and Tanya Tucker's What's Your Mama's Name."
Production for season 4 began in March 2015. The fourth season is set to premiere at the end of summer 2015. Netflix is expected to release all the "Longmire" season 4 episodes at once.
