Tom Cruise became famous for the scene in “Risky Business” where he plays air guitar in his underwear, lip-synching “Old Time Rock and Roll” by Bob Seger. The story of a rich teenager who stumbles into the world of prostitutes and pimps became one of the top films of 1983.
In 1989, Cruise starred in Oliver Stone’s “Born on the Fourth of July.” He plays real-life Vietnam War veteran, Ron Kovic, who comes home from the war paralyzed and eventually becomes an outspoken advocate for veterans. Cruise won a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor-Motion Picture Drama and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture.
In 1986, Cruise starred in “Top Gun” as an ace fighter pilot who falls in love with a civilian instructor at the Top Gun Naval Flying School. The film, directed by Tony Scott, was the highest grossing film of the year.
