There is no fee to renew an amateur radio license through the Federal Communications Commission. Operators can renew licenses beginning 90 days prior to expiration and up to two years after the license has expired.
Operators of amateur radios, also known as ham radios, can renew their licenses using FCC form 605 or online through the Universal Licensing System. Licenses that have been expired for more than two years may not be renewed and the operator must apply for a new license.
Applications for new amateur radio operator licenses require the applicant to pass an examination administered by a team of volunteer examiners. There is not a license fee, but volunteer examiners can charge a reimbursement fee for expenses.
