Some of the most famous movie quotes of all time according to the American Film Institute include "Frankly my dear, I don't give a damn" and "Here's looking at you, kid." "May the Force be with you" and "Go ahead, make my day" also made the AFI's top 100 list.
The first quote comes from the movie "Gone With the Wind," released in 1939. The line is spoken by the character Rhett Butler, played by Clark Gable, in his final scene opposite co-star Vivien Leigh, who plays Scarlett O'Hara. The line is a snub in response to O'Hara's attempts to win Rhett back. The second was uttered by actor Humphrey Bogart in the character of Rick Blane during the 1942 movie "Casablanca." Several quotes from "Casablanca" made the AFI list.
The third line comes from the "Star Wars" movies and is used by multiple characters in reference to a mysterious and omnipotent creative power. The final quote listed is from the 1983 movie "Sudden Impact." It is spoken by the character Harry Callahan -- also known as "Dirty Harry," played by Clint Eastwood.
All of these movie quotes have become internationally famous and are often quoted both in reference to and independently of the films from which they originated.
