Some famous mountain men include Kit Carson, John "Grizzly" Adams and James Beckwourth. While Carson and Adams were both white men, Beckwourth began his life born into slavery until freed by his master, who also was his father.
Kit Carson, who served in the military in the Mexican American War and Indian Wars, spent his life in the West exploring the Rocky Mountains and California.
John "Grizzly" Adams traversed the California mountains capturing bears for zoos and circuses. He faced the bears with only a knife and managed to subdue the majority of them alive.
James Beckwourth spent time with the Crow Native American tribe and explored the Sierra Nevada mountain range, where he discovered a trail that aided settlers attempting to get to California for the gold rush. It bears his name as Beckwourth Pass.
