Who Is the Most Famous Director in Ethiopian Cinema?

The producer, actor and director Theodros Teshome is the most popular Ethiopian filmmaker by box office receipts. He directed the two highest-grossing Ethopian films, "Kezkaza Welafegn" (2003) and "Abay vs. Vegas" (2010).

The romantic comedy "Abay vs Vegas," filmed in Ethiopia and Las Vegas in America, had a limited international release, while "Kezkaza Welafegn" is notable as the first movie ever to be produced and released by an Ethiopian who was still living in Ethiopia at the time. The filmmaker Haile Gerima is also Ethiopian, but moved to America in his 20s. He is best-known as the director of the award-winning "Sankofa" (1993).
