Known as "The King Of Swing," Benny Goodman was a famous American clarinet player during the Big Band era of the 1930s and 1940s. Artie Shaw was another outstanding jazz clarinetist and bandleader during the same period. Another popular jazz clarinetist who thrived during that era was Woody Herman.
Perhaps the best-known clarinetist in the United States in 2015 is classical player Richard Stoltzman, who has played with over 100 orchestras. Stoltzman has also played with many chamber groups and performed numerous solo recitals.
Internationally, Anton Stadler, Johann Simon Hermstedt, Heinrich Baermann and Richard Mühlfeld were successful clarinet players during the classical music period. Stadler helped inspire the popular compositions of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
