Hip hop artists who had famous beefs with each other include Jay-Z and Nas, Ice Cube and his former group, N.W.A, and 2Pac and Notorious B.I.G. The beef between 2Pac and Notorious B.I.G. was part of a larger hip hop beef between the East and West coasts.
The Jay-Z and Nas beef began in 2000, when Memphis Bleek, a protégé of Jay-Z, subliminally insulted Nas on a song. Nas responded, leading to Jay-Z's song "The Takeover," a direct insult of Nas, who responded with "Ether," considered in a Hot 97 poll as the beef's best song.
Ice Cube left N.W.A because he felt he wasn't being compensated properly. The rest of N.W.A insulted him, leading to his response song, "No Vaseline."
2Pac and Notorious B.I.G. were friends, but the latter released a song called "Who Shot Ya?" shortly after 2Pac was shot in 1994. Although the song didn't insult 2Pac, he responded with "Hit Em Up," a direct insult to Notorious B.I.G. and many other East Coast rappers. Both artists died from drive-by shootings.
