After performing as a stand-up comedian in the 1980s, Ellen DeGeneres achieved fame as the star of "Ellen," a sitcom that aired from 1994 to 1998. DeGeneres came out as a lesbian in 1997, as did her character on "Ellen," making her the first openly lesbian actress to play a lesbian character on television. She is also known for roles in films such as "Finding Nemo," and for hosting the 86th Academy Awards. DeGeneres began hosting "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" in 2003.
