In the book "To Kill a Mockingbird," Scout hears Miss Gates say at the courthouse, “It’s time somebody taught ‘em a lesson, they were gettin’ way above themselves, an’ the next thing they think they can do is marry us.” She was speaking of black people in this quote.
What makes these remarks stand out even more is that Miss Gates had stressed earlier in class in regard to Germany and the persecution of Jews that "Over here [in America] we don’t believe in persecuting anybody. Persecution comes from people who are prejudiced." Miss Gates did not recognize her attitude and that of her friends indicated persecution of and prejudice against their fellow townspeople of a different color. Her words confused Scout who had heard her earlier remarks and proved Miss Gates to be a hypocrite.
