Richard Engel divorced in 2005 while he was a foreign correspondent covering the Iraq War for NBC News. Engel began working for NBC News in May 2003, and became the network's chief foreign correspondent in April 2008. The award-winning journalist married a woman he met at Stanford University.
Engel covered the Iraq War, the Arab Spring, regime change in Egypt and the civil war in Syria, often putting himself in harm's way. The award-winning journalist and his television crew were held captive at the Syria-Turkey border for five days in 2012. Engel's pieces appear on "NBC Nightly News," "Today," "Meet the Press" and "Dateline." Engel graduated from Stanford University in 1996 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in international relations.
