The United Nations Society of Writers granted Kushi the Award of Excellence in 1999. The Smithsonian Institute also opened a permanent historical collection in Michio Kushi's name in 1999. The following year, Michio Kushi received the Peace Abbey Courage of Conscience Award for his contributions to society.
