After performing a part of the song "Bad Romance" on "Saturday Night Live" on Oct. 2, 2009, Lady Gaga released the song in November of that year. The song debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 chart at number nine for the week ending Nov. 14.
In its first week, "Bad Romance" sold 143,000 paid digital downloads. Described by Lady Gaga as a song about "tough female spirit," "Bad Romance" peaked at number two on the U.S. Hot 100 chart but was able to reach the summit on the British chart, making Lady Gaga the first solo female artist to have three U.K. chart-toppers in a calendar year. The song reached number one on the U.S. Pop Songs and Hot Dance Club charts.
According to Nielsen Soundscan, "Bad Romance" has sold over 5.5 million copies in the United States, as of April 2015.
