James Arness had two children with his first wife Virginia Chapman; Jenny and Rolf. Until it was broken by Kelsey Grammer in 2004, Arness held the record for longest continuous role by a single actor for 20 years spent portraying U.S. Marshal Dillon on the popular TV series "Gunsmoke."
In 1975, Jenny Lee Arness died from a drug overdose. Rolf Arness became a professional surfer who was fueled by his father's support and desire to compete. He is considered by many to be the United State's first surfing champion.
After steadily rising through national competitions, Rolf Arness entered into the World Championships when he was 18 years old. He beat five other finalists with aggressive and confident surfing showcasing his strengths and talent for the sport and set the stage for generations to follow.
