Why Did David James Elliot Leave JAG?

David James Elliot left the television series "JAG" at the conclusion of the 10th season because his contract expired. Series creator Donald Bellisario planned to continue with a new leading man, but CBS did not renew the show.

Elliot played Navy attorney Commander Harmon "Harm" Rabb Jr. on the crime procedural beginning with the premiere episode. Because the producers hoped to cut production costs, Elliot appeared on screen less and less during the 10th season. Bellisario hired actor Chris Beetem for an intended 11th season in the hope of appealing to a younger ratings demographic. Elliot signed a deal with rival network ABC when CBS failed to meet his salary demands.
