BMG Music Services ended operations on June 30, 2009. BMG had reached out to its customers through email months earlier, encouraging them to use any music points or free certificates quickly. The email also informed members they were able to shop at bmgmusic.com through May 31, 2009.
In December 2008, six months before ceasing operations, the service announced it would no longer accept new members into the "12 CDs for free" program. BMG Music Service and its main competitor Columbia House were very popular in the 1990s. In June of 2005, BMG Direct Marketing bought Columbia House, which now offers a DVD and Blu-ray club.
