"Guardians of the Galaxy" broke the record for an August debut with a $94 million opening weekend. It beat out "The Bourne Ultimatum," which pulled in $69.3 million in its August 2007 premiere weekend.
"American Sniper," which had a limited release in late 2014, came close, but it did not start setting records until its wide release in January 2015. It earned $89 million in its opening weekend, breaking the record for January releases. It also is listed by BoxOfficeMojo.com as the highest grossing movie of 2014.
"Guardians of the Galaxy" ended up in third place for the year behind " American Sniper" and "Hunger Games: Catching Fire."
