James Brown's private funeral was held on Dec. 29, 2006 in North Augusta, South Carolina, four days after his death from pneumonia at the age of 73. Public funerals were also held for Brown in New York City, New York and Augusta, Georgia.
All three of Brown's funerals were officiated by Al Sharpton, and all featured elaborate presentations honoring the late singer's life. The first funeral was held on Dec. 28 at the Apollo Theater in Harlem and was attended by thousands of mourning celebrities and fans. Brown's private funeral was held the next day in North Augusta, with the final funeral held in Augusta, Georgia, on Dec. 30. Brown's casket was present at all three funerals.
Numerous celebrities attended Brown's funerals, including Lenny Kravitz, Jerry Lee Lewis, Michael Jackson and Dr. Dre. Music was performed at the funerals in Brown's honor, with his last back-up band, The Soul Generals, performing many of his hits, joined by Bootsy Collins on bass guitar and MC Hammer as a dancer. Ali-Ollie Woodson, the former lead singer of The Temptations, also performed "Walk Around Heaven All Day," and video clips were shown of Brown performing, as well as the Ray Charles rendition of "Georgia On My Mind."
