"The Madness of King George" stars Nigel Hawthorne as the title character and was adapted by Alan Bennett from his play of the same name. Hawthorne was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor for his role.
The play upon which the film was based was titled "The Madness of George III" but was changed to its current title during production. The film's director, Nicholas Hytner, explained that the change was to ensure non-British audiences understood the film was about a king. The movie was filmed Shepperton Studios, as well as various locations around England, such as Oxford, Berkshire, Greenwich and London.
