David Bromstad is an American television star and designer. He's most notably known as the winner of the first season of HGTV's "Design Star" competitive reality TV series. After his victory, the network signed him to host the 2007 show "Color Splash," which spun off "Color Splash Miami" in 2010.
David Bromstad was born on Aug. 17, 1973, in Cokato, Minnesota, the youngest of four children. He attended Wayzata High School and decided to pursue a career in design and art. David matriculated to Ringling College of Art and Design in Sarasota, Florida, to pursue his dream of becoming a Disney animator. After graduating, he succeeded in becoming an illustrator for the company, only to be laid off later.
Bromstad started his own company, Bromstad Studios, after his discharge, focusing on interior design. His specialty was designing creative bedrooms for children. A friend urged him to try out for the "Design Star" competition, which he subsequently won while facing nine competitors over the course of the 2006 television season. The grand prizes of the show were a new car and the chance to host an HGTV show.
In addition to his work with the HGTV network, Bromstad markets Miele appliances and is a spokesperson for Mythic Paint.
