The Nae Nae dance was created by a hip-hop group called We Are Toonz and was popularized through a song and music video called "Drop That #NaeNae." The song became popular through various social media networks in late 2013 and early 2014.
During the 90-day period preceding January 27, 2014, the #NaeNae hashtag was used on Twitter over 1.1 million times. The song and dance was also spread through YouTube, Instagram and Vine. At the height of its popularity, various athletic teams and athletes performed the dance as part of their celebrations. One of these performances occurred after the January 1, 2014, Rose Bowl when the Michigan State football players danced the Nae Nae.
