Digimon was created by Akiyoshi Hongo. Digimon creatures are monsters that inhabit a digital world. The name Digimon is short for Digital Monsters and it is a Japanese media franchise that produces everything from video games and films to virtual toys.
The franchise was originally created as a series of virtual pets to match Tamagotchi toys, but the creatures transformed thanks to the influence of American comics. The brand then gained momentum due to its film Digimon Adventure. In 1999, the anime cartoon show Digimon: Digital Monsters was created. The show was about young teens being paired up with their individual digimons and using their powers to fight evil and save the world. The show ran from 1999 to 2013.
