The top three companies on the Fortune 1000 list for 2015 are Wal-Mart, Exxon Mobil and Chevron. The other companies in the top five are Berkshire Hathaway and Apple; the top five entries on the list did not change between 2014 and 2015. Apple posted the largest profit in 2015, with $39,510 million. It was also the highest valued company in the United States for the year.
Fortune magazine ranks companies by revenue for the given fiscal year. The companies included in the survey are those that are incorporated in the United States, that operate in the United States and that file statements with U.S. government agencies.
The Fortune magazine website includes the top 500 entries on the list, a group of companies that is referred to as the Fortune 500. The website includes a ranking by revenue; however, users can also view the list according to other metrics such as revenue change, profits, number of employees and market value. Wal-Mart is the largest employer in the United States, with 2.2 million employees as of 2015. The next largest employer, McDonald's, employs 420,000 people.
Historical lists are also available from the Fortune website; Fortune 500 lists going back to 1996 are included. Two members of the 2015 top five, Wal-Mart and Exxon, are also in the top five for 1996.
