Chris Van Allsburg was born in 1949 in East Grand Rapids, Mich. He has written and illustrated over 20 books, including "Jumanji," "The Polar Express" and "Zathura." His illustrations have attributed to the works of C.S. Lewis and Mark Helprin. In Van Allsburg's work, a small white dog is featured in a variety of forms: a puppet, a plastic toy or an actual dog. This dog, called Fritz, is based on his brother-in-law's bull terrier, Winston.
