Luis Vargas, portrayed by Antonio Banderas, is a wealthy Cuban businessman who seeks out an American wife. Angelina Jolie plays an American woman who calls herself Julia Russell. She travels to Cuba to meet Vargas after a long-distance relationship. Once they meet, it is apparent that both have not been entirely forthcoming about themselves. The two fall in love anyway and marry within days of their first meeting.
Vargas finds out his new wife is a con artist when she empties his bank account and disappears. He hires Walter Downs, a supposed detective played by Thomas Jane, to help him track her down.
The film "Original Sin" was released in 2001 and was not generally well received by critics. It was directed by Michael Cristofer and was based on the novel "Waltz Into Darkness" by Cornell Woolrich. "Original Sin" is the second film adaptation of the book. The first was the 1969 French film "Mississippi Mermaid."
