The story focuses on Carl Brashear as he leaves his native Kentucky home to join the U.S. Navy. While he works as a crew member of a salvage ship, he is inspired by the bravery of another diver, Master Chief Petty Officer Leslie William Sunday. Carl Brashear is determined to become the first black Navy diver, and he believes that he can become a master diver through his hard work. Eventually, the Diving and Salvage school selects him to attend classes, and he arrives as a boatswain's mate second class.
Over the course of the film, Brashear struggles to compensate for his educational shortcomings. His wife helps him, and Brashear proves himself to be a capable diver by rescuing one of his classmates. Despite the discriminatory behaviors of the school's superior, Brashear finishes his tests and graduates from the diving school, earning the admiration of his fellow divers. Because Master Chief Sunday was on the committee and approved of Brashear passing, he is demoted to senior chief. The paths of the two men continue to cross, and the film ends with Brashear becoming a master diver.
