Ways to carve a face into a pumpkin include cutting holes freehand or tracing a pattern onto the pumpkin before beginning to cut. A pumpkin carving kit often includes a design template along with the tools needed to carve a jack o' lantern.
The first step to carving a face into a pumpkin is to remove the top of the pumpkin. Cut a hole in the top of the pumpkin with a serrated knife, and include a notch to ensure that the top of the pumpkin stays secure once it's reattached. After removing the top of the pumpkin, scoop out the seeds, and scrape any extra material from the inside walls.
You can either use a template to draw eyes, a nose and a mouth, or draw the features on the pumpkin with a pencil. Use a plastic knife to lightly score the shapes of the features to give yourself a line to follow when you make the cuts all the way through the pumpkin with the serrated knife you used to open the top of the pumpkin. It is also possible to cut the face out without drawing or tracing the features first, but this is significantly more difficult.
