Seasons one through three of the "Longmire" television series are available for streaming online from Amazon, Netflix, Vudu and iTunes or for purchase as DVD box sets; however, season four is only available through Netflix, as of September 2015. The show's original network, A&E, cancelled it at the end of the third season, after which Netflix purchased the series to continue with a fourth season.
The modern western police drama is now part of the growing Netflix stable of original content. The series is based on the best-selling novels by Craig Johnson that detail the mysteries encountered by fictional sheriff Walt Longmire of Absaroka County, Wyoming. Season four begins where the cliff-hanging end to season three left off. The same cast of characters - including Robert Taylor as Walt Longmire, Katie Sackhoff as Deputy Maretti and Lou Diamond Phillips as Henry Standing Bear - work together to serve up justice in the new west.
Despite being one of the network's most-watched shows with nearly 6 million weekly viewers, A&E cancelled "Longmire" due its primarily older audience. The network wanted to focus on shows that appealed to a younger audience, the demographic most appealing to advertisers. The large number of viewers interested Netflix since the service is subscription-based rather than advertisement-based.
