In 1956, Elvis Presley began his acting career by doing a screen test for Paramount Pictures. The same year he signed a seven-year contract with Paramount that also allowed him to work with other studios. His first acting role began with the 1956 film, “Love Me Tender.” The film became a box office success, earning $540,000 in its first week. Several more Presley films were later released, such as “King Creole” and “Jailhouse Rock.”
After returning from the Army, Presley starred in the 1960 film, “G.I. Blues.” The film was nominated for three awards, and critics praised Presley for his improved acting ability. Although most of Presley’s films received negative critic reviews, most films and soundtracks became a major success. Presley’s final two theatrical films were concert documentaries; one of them, “Elvis on Tour,” won a Golden Globe award in 1973.
