Baroness Emmuska Orczy wrote "The Scarlet Pimpernel" in 1901, but it was not published. Orczy adapted it to a stage play in 1903, and after the play received positive reviews, the first edition of the novel was published in 1905. As of 2015, "The Scarlet Pimpernel" has been made into two movies. The first, released in 1934, starred Leslie Howard and Merle Oberon. The second, a TV movie, was released in 1982 and starred Anthony Andrews and Jane Seymour.
