Hall earned her bachelor's degree in broadcast journalism from Temple University. Her first job in the field was as a reporter at KBTX-TV in the Bryan, Texas. She was later a reporter and morning news show co-host for 10 years in Chicago before joining MSNBC in 2007. Hall's charitable interests include working against domestic violence, homelessness and illiteracy.
Hall wrote a personal article for Today.com in 2014 in which she revealed that her deceased sister, Renate, had been a domestic violence victim. Her 2004 homicide remains unsolved.
