Black History Month is observed in February in the United States and Canada and in October in the United Kingdom. The event began in 1926 as Negro History Week, held during the second week of February. This week was chosen because it encompasses the birthdays of civil rights leaders Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass.
In 1976, the event was expanded to cover the full month of February, and Black History Month was officially recognized as part of the United States Bicentennial.
