Some free music services for computers include Spotify, Pandora and iTunes Radio. These services all allow users to stream enormous selections of free songs directly to their computers.
Spotify is one of the largest streaming platforms online, boasting a selection of more than 20 million songs as of 2016. The Spotify desktop application allows users to browse music by artist, genre, album, mood or theme. The service also features curated mixes and recommends other artists based on users’ listening preferences. Nearly all of the content on Spotify is available for free, but users must listen to brief advertisements after every few songs.
Pandora is a unique streaming service that creates custom radio stations based on users’ preferences. Users create radio stations by selecting a genre, artist or song, and they can further refine the station’s content by either liking or disliking songs. Pandora makes use of the Music Genome Project, a complex system that creates new track selections by comparing the various sonic qualities of different songs and pinpointing similarities.
Apple’s iTunes offers a variety of free streaming stations through its iTunes Radio service. Users can select from DJ-curated stations or create their own custom stations based on artist or genre. The service only allows six song skips per hour of listening, and users must also listen to occasional advertisements in between songs.
