James Douglas Muir Leno was born on April 28, 1950 in New Rochelle, New York, and is most well known as the host of "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" from 1992 to 2014. He is the son of Irish immigrant Catherine Muir and Italian-American insurance salesman Angelo Leno. Leno's family moved to Ballardvale, Massachusetts where he was raised.In 1973, after earning a degree in speech therapy from Emerson College, Leno opened a comedy club in the area and began a side career as a stand up comedian.
After several years of performing, Leno made his first appearance on "The Tonight Show" in 1977, which was then hosted by Johnny Carson. This lead to a brief career in action, while Leno continued his career in comedy. By 1987 Leno was chosen as a regular substitute host for Johnny Carson on "The Tonight Show" until 1992, when he became the full-time replacement for Carson.
Leno has a lifelong love of cars and motor vehicles, as well as charity work. Starting in 1985, he has been the Grand Marshal of the Love Ride charity motorcycle ride.Learn more about Art & Literature
