Parker wrote four book series, which were the Spenser series, the Jesse Stone series, the Sunny Randall series and the Virgil Cole/Everett Hitch series. The Spenser series was the first series he wrote. Parker primarily wrote detective stories, with the Spenser series, the Jesse Stone series and the Sunny Randall series all considered detective fiction. The Virgil Cole/Everett Hitch series are Western fiction.

Parker was born on September 17, 1932 and married in 1956. He has two sons. He died on January 18, 2010 of a heart attack. He won several awards for his work, including two Edgar Awards and a Maltese Falcon Award.
